XJ6 Series 1 Empty XJ6 Series 1

Hi,
I've bought a 1969 XJ6 Series 1, manual o/drive, but haven't seen it yet as it is at Jaguar specialist, Mike Roddy Jaguar, in Melbourne (about 3,000 kms away) getting a few things done to it before it is brought to W.A.
It was originally a 2.8 litre car, but has been converted to a 4.2, however, the original engine also comes with the car so it can be put back to original if required. It has no rust and has never had any.
The body needs a bit of TLC apparently, with a few dents and scratches (it was owned by an elderly gent who eventually had to give up driving) but that can be sorted out later.
It is currently being prepared for licensing and is having the correct rear axle fitted, upgraded cooling, airconditioning, etc, so that it will be useable as soon as it arrives.
It is white with the original red leather interior and being an early build, has the chrome instrument surrounds and straight exhaust outlets.
This model is the one I always wanted ever since I was growing up in the U.K. but have only just been able to get one.
If anyone else has one of these, or any advice in relation to them, I would be grateful to hear.
If I get the chassis number, does anyone know how to check exactly how early in production it was?
When it finally gets here, I'll post some photos.
Thanks.
Dave

I have thought about flying to Melbourne and driving back to Perth. As you said, it would be a great trip.
But I'd hate to get stranded in the middle of the Nullabor with a broken-down Jag, as it would make it a very expensive exercise, so I'm a little bit hesitant.
I'll give it some thought............!

Hmmm, perhaps buy some good breakdown cover and take several sim cards so all networks are covered and you wont be out of signal!! Cool

I think there would be large areas with no signal. Breakdown cover is something I hadn't thought of though. I don't even know if it is available here but I'll make some inquiries.

Oh I think I just took it for granted that everywhere offered breakdown cover! Its something I never go without (as you say, not with an old British built car haha!!)

I had a feeling tho that signal may be more of a problem with so many large areas of uninhabited land.

Yeah, there would be big gaps in telecommunication I'm sure, but there is lots of traffic on the highway so there would always be help if needed. It's just the cost of anything like that happening. If you have to tow a car several hundred or a thousand kilometres (or more if it's a Jag probably) it would cost a fortune.
Mind you, there are all sorts of old & different types of cars that do the crossing on a daily basis, so the odds are it would probably work out ok.

Breakdown cover. I think I had a brain freeze or something. Embarassed
I'm guessing it's the same as our roadside assistance (RAC etc).
In any event, it wouldn't cover you out there as there are towage limits etc with the RAC cover so I think you'd be on your own if you broke down on the Nullabor.
With good cooling system, hoses, etc, it should all be ok. It's only a road after all! But it's just that one in a hundred chance I guess.

Yes, roadside assistance, pretty much the same thing.

The breakdown companies over here are sneaky. Many people buy "roadside assistance" thinking that they are buying breakdown cover, but actually are just getting cover for someone to come and look at their car and either fix it at the roadside or tow it to the nearest garage, and its got to be at least 1/4 mile from their home! So if you want more than "roadside assistance" you have to have special options for home cover and reaching your destination. I guess if you look further into the small print there are milage limits as well, but i imagine definately there is in somewhere as big as Australia lol!!! Laughing

Just a quick update.
Apparently the car is nearly ready.
It has had the correct rear axle fitted, upgraded cooling system, new heavy duty radiator with twin thermo fans to cope with the West Aussie heat, rebuilt brakes, new stainless steel exhaust system & integrated air conditioning fitted.
And although I don't think my bank manager is particularly happy, I'm looking forward to getting it here.
