Front Suspension Ground Clearance

Post  Facelift on Fri Aug 20, 2010 1:27 pm

Hello,

I replaced the front sub frame and suspension recently on my '91 facelift and it's a vast improvement.

However, I'm still concerned about the knocking noises on speed bumps and how much I have to slow down to prevent them.

I realise this may just be the low slung dimensions of the car.

If I stick a tape measure underneath when parked on the flat the spring pans clear the ground by three and three quarter inches on the inside edges (engine most) and about four inches on the outside (towards the wheels). The main beam of the sub frame is four inches off the ground.

Does this sound about right?

Also, if I look at the front wheels square on, the wheel arches appear to clear the top of the tyres by about and inch.

When replacing the sub frame I used the original suspension springs again as they didn't look as if they needed replacing.

Any thoughts or ideas at all? Thanks.

Hey, I will measure mine up today and see if it correlates with yours. I also get that knocking noise on speed bumps, and I am very worried about this. I have yet to have a proper look as on axle stands it still sits so low you cant have a proper look, so am waiting to borrow a ramp.

I think the ground clearance should be about four inches according to Jaguar.

The knocking noise, could it be the shock absorber top bushes that need replacing?

No it's not that Peter. When I say knocking noise I'm actually describing the scraping/banging noises that happen as the bottom of my car strikes the speed bump.

E-J, thanks. I'd really appreciate it if you could get some measurements when convenient, even if only approximate.

Thanks.

F.

By the way, since this post started I have come to the conclusion that my knocks may be because of perishing/perished gearbox mounts ... im pretty sure the box is hitting my floor pan when going over these stupid speed bumps ...

As far as I know perished gearbox mounts is a classic problem on the XJ-S. At least on V12 cars. Both cars I have ownwed has suffered from this.

By the way that issue of the gearbox mount seems to have come to prominence since they first mentioned it on Wheeler Dealers in June last year. It is a a classic fault but don't lets jump on the bandwagon in thinking it is always the first problem that crops up. I've noticed everyone always mentions this fault straight away now because it's the thing to say.

I just had a look on the JDHT CD for the factory figures for pre MY1993,5 facelifts and it says following:

Ground clearance (at gross vehicle weight):
4.0 litre with 15" wheels 126 mm, 5,0"
4.0 litre with 16" wheels 123 mm, 4,8"

It also says that when checking the steering geometry, use the pull-down tool to set the ride height to following:

Front 153 mm between the underside of the beam and the ground.
Rear 162 mm between the underside of the rear suspension cradle and the ground.

I hope this helps Very Happy

Hia, I havent heard of this problem before so i wasnt just jumping to conclusions (although I keep meaning to watch that Wheeler Dealers with the XJS as everyone keeps saying I must lol!), i just mentioned it because mine HAS gone and thats a similar description to the noises mine makes, I just thought it would be helpful to share the information with you. ?

That's fair enough E-J, and you're right. It is helpful to share this information so thank you, you're doing a grand job.

It looks like the other half of my post has been edited but having been around a bit, I must admit I have seen that fault mentioned rather a lot in recent months.

Thank you for those measurements by the way Peter I'm very grateful for that post.

As a matter of interest I got my car back last week after having the tracking done and two new front tyres fitted (15") and I didn't realise at first but the knocking on speed bumps is a lot less now. So much so that I'd say the car is back to how it was originally before any of the front suspension faults were too noticeably bad.
